In Lungau, history comes alive: From mighty walls to mysterious towers to venerable courtyards – the castles and palaces around St. Michael im Lungau are among the most impressive Lungau sights. Here you can immerse yourself in times gone by, experience adventures with the whole family and discover places where princes and knights once resided.

A fascinating journey through time to the Middle Ages

About 10 km from St. Michael lies Mauterndorf Castle, dating from the 13th century, on a rock in the northwest of the village. Here you can expect an exciting journey through time to the late Middle Ages. Get to know the landlord, Archbishop Leonhard von Keutschach and his entourage personally…

More information about Mauterndorf Castle

Due to its central location, Moosham was the seat of the Salzburg regional princes and archbishops from around 1520, and thus also the blood and care court until 1790. At the end of the 17th century, numerous trials against “witches and wizards” took place at Moosham Castle. Count Hans Nepomuk Wilczek (1837-1922) bought the castle in 1886 and equipped it as a museum with collectibles he had collected. It is still family-owned today. Focus of the museum: residential culture of different style epochs (16th-19th century), sculptures, wagon castle, hunting weapons, North Pole expedition, court room with executioner’s sword, torture chamber, finds from Roman times.

The adventure castle in Ramingsteig

Finstergün Castle was first mentioned in documents in the 13th century as a “border fortress” and in 1629 for the first time with its name Finstergruan – which means as much as a dark ditch. In 1841 it was destroyed by a forest fire and is today, through the reconstruction of the castle complex by Count Sandor Szápàry, a well-preserved ruin with a knight’s hall, battlements, game treasure chamber and root tables.

A circular hiking trail around the 1500 m high Prebersee invites you to a relaxing walk in the landscape protection area, and the surrounding mountains entice you to wonderful hiking and mountain tours.

Understanding nature in the Lungau Biosphere Park

à la Wastl

The educational trails in the Lungau Biosphere Park combine nature experiences with aha moments. Whether plants, animals or history – on every themed trail you will get to know the region with new eyes. Between meadows, forests and old mills, the educational trails become a silent classroom under the open sky.

In the center of St. Michael, a beautiful garden invites all flower lovers to take a walk. Above all, herbs and medicinal plants, which occur naturally here in the Biosphere Park area Lungau Murau Nockberge, can be admired here.

Along the mill path, old mills and grain boxes have been restored to their original use. At the end of the mill path is the Walcherhaus with information about rural life in Lungau. In the old forge, a film about the work of the blacksmith is shown. In the exhibition room you can admire various handicrafts, wood carvings, ceramics and peasant paintings by Zederhaus artists.

At the foot of the Leonhardsberg, the planet trail begins in the direction of Unternberg. Here, those interested can hike through our solar system. The models of the sun and planets are shown in their average distances on a scale of 1:1 billion (1 mm on the educational trail corresponds to 1,000 km in the solar system). The models are also reproduced true to scale in their sizes. Walking time: approx. 1.5h.

In St. Margarethen, visitors can perceive water with all their senses. This path, past the dwarf cave and the natural playground, is also a very special adventure for children. In the St. Margareten municipal office you will receive a story book with a treasure map. If the children stick to the path that the map prescribes and complete all the tasks, they will be rewarded several times over at the Gasthof Schlögelberger.

The circular trail around the Schlierersee presents the natural and cultural area of Riedingtal with many of its facets: history of land use in the Riedingtal, alpine pastures and their management, biotopes with their fauna and flora, hunting and wild animals in the Riedingtal. The starting point of this themed trail is the Naturparkhaus. Walking time. approx. 1 hour / length: approx. 1.5 km

On the seven stations on the theme of “water-nature-man” you can recharge your batteries and enjoy the silence of nature. The path is part of the long-distance hiking trail and connects the Lower Tauern with the High Tauern. At the same time, the path crosses some transitions from the Riedingtal, which in the past were important connections to the outside world for the remote end of the valley.

The Nature-Pur-Weg provides insights into the extensive range of our animal and plant world. Over 50 stations provide information about the hammer mill, glacier mill, Mauterndorf Castle, ski area, animal species, tree species, tell of the golden eagle, fox, fir tree and chanterelles. You can get in anywhere.

Along meadows and forests, with a magnificent view of the mountains, you can relive the history of witch persecution on original locations on this themed trail. On large-scale panels you can put yourself in the living conditions of the 17th century, the court trials and the condemned. The starting point of this approx. 1.5h long path is the St. Andrä sports field or at the Passeggen chapel.

The paths in Altenberg and Dürnrain offer a special insight into the historical silver mining in Lungau. At the municipality of Ramingstein you can experience two different themed trails (2 or 3 hours walking time). The Erzweg Altenberg with Montanlehrpfad leads over the Kirchsteig to the disused marble quarry, the Erzweg Dürnrain leads past Finstergrün Castle past tunnels and heaps.
